Telling Our Story - Council for Responsible Sport - 11/14/2011

Last weekend, we attended the annual Road Race Management Race Directors’ Meeting in Hollywood, Florida. From a marketing standpoint, it was our coming out party; after four years of working with events on a one-on-one basis, often just by e-mail and phone, we were finally able to get up close and personal with our peeps.
In addition to the social benefits of the RRM meeting, our objective was to launch our stakeholder review effort for v3.0 of our certification standards. Slated to go into effect on January 1, 2012, v3.0 standards will address the areas of Waste, Climate & Energy, Procurement & Sourcing, Community Impact, Healthy Lifestyle, Community Involvement, Inclusion, Innovation and Expos.
Public comment is welcome and open until Thanksgiving. If you’d like to participate, please drop our Managing Director, Catherine Humblet, an e-mail request for the stakeholder review packet of materials: Catherine [at] CouncilForResponsibleSport [dot] org.
For our marketing launch, we tried to bring one of the new certification standards to life. Procurement & Sourcing Credit 3.3 addresses large format banner printing (event banners, directional signage, etc.), and specifies that all large format digital printing by event organizer is printed in a sustainable manner, is expected to be reused for future events, or is taken back by the manufacturer.
Working with our friends at Britten Banners, we were able to source the sustainably produced backdrop banner and signs you see at the top of this post. The backdrop is an Enviro-Tex fabric (ET 9496) made from 45% Reprevecertified recycled polyester; the two signs are Bioboard, which is produced from 63% post consumer waste materials and is 100% recyclable.
We used the signs to tell the story of Credit 3.3 and the sustainable materials used for both the backdrop banner and event signage, which allowed us bring the story we were telling full circle and to walk our talk.
